♦ They are very good at problem solving, which makes sense considering how good they are at adapting. They can be taught to unscrew a lid or remove a plug to get a prey from a container!
♦ It’s typical for an octopus to collect shells and other objects that surround them to construct a “home” or “garden” around where they live. Some other types of octopuses carry shells for protection.
♦ All varieties of octopuses are venomous. Most do not have the potency or amount to kill a human. The blue ringed octopus is responsible for at least 2 confirmed deaths. They inject venom through their hard nose like beak.
♦ Most octopuses have an ink sac that can shoot out steams of dark ink like liquid when they are threatened. This serves 3 purposes.
- When threatened they swallow water and shoot it out, which propels them and shoots ink. This typically distracts the predator and makes the octopus jet away.
- The substance can interfere with the predators sense of sight or smell.
- The ink clouds the water, making it difficult for the predator to find the octopus.
♦ Their ink may be different colors; black, red or brown. 
♦ The substance in the ink is melanin, the same dark pigment found in human skin and hair.
♦ An octopus has horizontal pupils. Even stranger, when they go upside down their eyes stay in the same position. So they never see anything upside down.
♦ An octopus has special cells called chromatophores which enable it to blend into it’s surroundings.
♦ An octopus has 3 hearts. Two are used to pump blood to each of it’s lungs and the last one pumps blood throughout it’s body.
♦ Octopuses are extremely flexible and can fit into very tiny places. They can squeeze their bodies through holes that are about the same size as their eyes.

Blue Ringed Octopus Facts For Kids
The blue ringed octopus is one of the more beautifully marked species of octopuses. They are typically found around Australia. They have a very powerful muscular neurotoxin and are considered one of the most venomous marine animals. They are about 10-100g heavy and are typically the size of a golf ball.
California Two-Spot Octopus Facts For Kids
The California two spot octopus is found off the coast of California. They are also known as the “bimac” octopus. This type of octopus is commonly kept as a pet, in a 50 gallon or larger tank. Their mantle size can be as big as 7 inches and arms can reach lengths of 23 inches. They get their name because of an eye blue like spot that appears below their eye.
Caribbean Reef Octopus Facts For Kids
The Caribbean reef octopus or just reef octopus have distinctive blue-green colors with the occasional brown markings. They are found throughout the Bahamas, Caribbean, Western Atlantic and the costs of northern South America. They are not very big, their mantle is around 12 cm with arms getting as large as 60 cm. They can weight up to 1.5 kg.

The East Pacific red octopus typically hangs out in shallow water. It is found on North American west coast from Alaska all the way south to the California Gulf. They typically grow as large as 8-10 cm for their mantle and 30-40 cm for their arms. An adult generally weigh around 100-150 grams. Although this is the common size, they have been discovered to be as large as 400 grams!

All octopuses have the ability to change their color to blend in with their surroundings, but the mimic octopus takes this a step further. They can weight up to 110 pounds. They have giant bulbous heads and are typically a reddish brown color. They grow larger and live longer than any other octopus type. The North pacific giant octopus is highly intelligent. They have the ability to solve problems and mimic other animals. They are truly amazing creatures. The largest recorded North pacific giant octopus was 30 feet across (9,1 meters) and weighed more than 600 pounds (272 kilograms).

The Atlantic Pygmy octopus is the smallest of all octopus. Fully grown they reach sizes of only 2-4 inches big. They often seek refuge from predators in clam shells, using their tiny arms to close the shell. The hatch-lings are tiny (0.04 g), but are fully formed and can begin to hunt within hours. At full size they typically only weigh 30 g.
