What is Niagara Falls?
The answer to this one seems rather obvious, but it’s actually not. Many people don’t know that Niagara Falls is actually a collection of 3 different waterfalls, not just one. In order from largest to smallest they are, Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls.
Where is Niagara Falls?
It’s located right on the New York and Canadian border. The larger of the falls, Horseshoe Falls is mostly on the Canadian side, but American Falls and Bridal Veil falls both fall on the United States side. The bigger two, American and Horseshoe Falls are separated by Goat Island. Check out the map below for it’s exact location.
How Big Are Niagara Falls?
Horseshoe Falls – It drops about 173 feet (53m) and is about 2600 feet wide (790m). That’s over half a mile wide!
American Falls – It drops between 70-100 feet (21-30 m), depending on location. It’s about 1,060 feet wide (320 m).
Bridal Veil Falls – It drops 78 feet (24 m) and is only 56 feet (17 m) wide. Being by far the smaller of the 3.

♦ About 28,000,000 or 28 million liters of water travel over Niagara Falls every second. Imagine 7,396,821 gallons of milk going over the falls every second!
♦ It was so cold back in the 1800’s, Niagara Falls was nearly frozen solid. Only a small trickle of water was able to pass through.
♦ Fish actually survive the fall when traveling through the Niagara River. It’s believed that 90% of them can survive. Some believe the foam provides a cushion for the fish to land.
♦ If you visit the Canadian side of the falls from noon until the sun sets, you are almost guaranteed to see a beautiful rainbow! Don’t forget your camera!
♦ Many people have went over the falls, the first was a very brave 63 year old teacher. She traveled down the falls in a barrel. Her name was Annie Edson Tayler and she did this on October 24th, 1901.
♦ Annie was the first to go over the falls, but there have been 14 people who have attempted after her. Some survived, but some did drown or become severely injured. It’s illegal to go over the falls, you will face stiff penalties and fines for doing so.
♦ On July 9, 1960 the “Miracle at Niagara” happened. Roger Woodard, an American boy, was carried over the Horseshoe falls wearing only a life jacket. His sister was pulled out of the river just 20 feet before going over the edge. Miraculously Woodard was pulled out of the roiling plunge pool under Horseshoe Falls. The Maiden of the Mist was able to throw a life preserver out to the boy and pull him to safety.
♦ There have been a few people that managed to tight rope over the gorge. The first was Jean Francois “Blondin” Gravelet, he did so in 1859.
♦ The oldest start park is the U.S.A is none other than the Niagara Falls State park. It was established in 1885 and became the cornerstone to the New York State office of Parks.
♦ Niagara Falls can produce up to 4 million kilowatts of electricity which is shared al over the United States and Canada.
♦ The lower Niagara river helps support one of New York state’s endangered fish, the Lake Sturgeon.
♦ There are 14 species of rare plants found in the Niagara River gorge, some are endangered and threatened.
♦ There are over 600 species of flora documented on Goat Island.
♦ Scientists believe that Niagara Falls will be gone within 50,000 years due to it’s state of erosion. It is actually moving about 4 feet a year, and has moved over 7 miles in the last 12,500 years.
♦ One of the largest Butterfly Conservatories in the United States has been added as an attraction at Niagara.
♦ Fairly recently two people have tried their hand in plunging over Niagara Falls. One in a jet ski the other in a kayak. Neither of them made it out alive. 🙁
