Let’s talk about how baseball works!

How does baseball work?

Baseball is actually a pretty complex sport. I will do my best to explain the rules without going into too many details. I want you to be able to walk away with a basic understanding of how the sport works!

There is no timer in baseball. A game can last as long as it needs to, and won’t end until one team wins. The game is played by innings instead of a clock. Innings are subdivided into halves and in professional and college baseball there are typically 9 innings.facts about baseball for kids boston redsox

The team will be able to bat and attempt to score points in the first half of the inning. The other team will take the field and play defense during this time. The goal of the defense is to attempt to get the players “out” in many different ways.  Once the defense is able to establish three outs, they then get an opportunity to go to bat and try to get runs. The team that was batting now moves to the field and plays defense.

The primary action of the sport is composed of 2 players. You have a pitcher and a batter. The pitcher will stand on the “pitching mound” while the batter will stand in front of home plate with a bate.

The pitcher throws the ball to the catcher, who is behind the plate with extra padding for protection. The objective of the pitcher is to make the batter swing and miss, or throw to an area called the batters strike zone. The strike zone is the area that the batter can hit the ball reasonably. If the batter swings, or doesn’t swing at a pitch in the strike zone, he get’s a strike. On the third strike he is out.

The objective of the batter is to hit the ball into play where there are no defenders to get on base. He can run to as many bases as he can but must avoid being tagged by the players, he is only safe on base. If the batter hits the ball in the air, and the defender catches it before it hits the ground he will also be called out. If the batter hits the ball over the fence in the outfield, it’s a home run. He automatically scores a run for himself and whoever is on base at that time.

Second Baseman – Covers the area of the field between second base and first base.

Third Baseman – Covers the are around 3rd base.

Pitcher – Throws the ball to the catcher and attempts to make the batter swing and miss, or places pitches within the strike zone that are hard to hit. The Pitcher also fields the ball if hit in his direction.
