Out of all the big cats that roam South America, the Jaguar is the largest. These incredibly cats used to be found anywhere from the southern tip of South America, all the way up to the US and Mexico border. They are now more secluded to the remote areas of the Amazon Basin found in South and Central America.
In ancient native American cultures, the Jaguar played a large role. Some of the ancient traditions named the jaguar as the God of the Night and was the formidable lord of the underworld. Jaguars were named from the native American word yaguar, which means “he who kills with one leap.”
They are very different than many other large cats, instead of avoiding water they thrive in it. They are actually very good swimmers. They utilize the water to find food, they will hunt turtles, fish and small alligator like animals called caimans. They will also climb a tree to prepare themselves for an attack on animals such as peccaries, capybaras, deer and tapir. They will typically take the prey out with one powerful bite.
Jaguars are typically orange or tan and have black spots that are referred to as rosettes. The spots are shaped like roses, this is where their name comes from. Some jaguars can be so dark that the spots don’t appear, they are there but their fur is darker.
Jaguars typically live alone and mark trees and use their waste to mark their territory.
The cubs, which are blind and helpless at birth are defended by their mother fiercely. The mother will typically have litters of one to four cubs. A young jaguar will spend up to 2 years with their mother learning to live and hunt.
Jaguars beautiful fur is somewhat of a curse for them. They are hunted and killed for their amazing fur. They can also be hunted and killed by ranchers, jaguars will often kill their livestock.

♦ They only typically live 12-15 years in the wild, but can last for up to 25 in captivity.
♦ They were worshiped by both the Mayans and Aztecs.
♦ Jaguars are very solitary animals, and just wish to be left alone.
♦ The home range of a males territory is between 19-53 miles, and they aggressively protect this territory. This can overlap the territory of many females.
♦ The jaguar obtained it’s rose shaped spots by daubing mud on it’s body with it’s paws, according to an indigenous myth.
♦ There are roughly only 15,000 jaguars left in the wild. They are hunted for their beautiful fur.
♦ There is a huge conservation effort in the remote mountains of Sonora in Mexico. This is bordering Arizona and is most likely the jaguars last chance to be repopulated in the U. S. There are currently 120-180 jaguars in those mountains.
♦ Their strength and beauty have made them the mascot and idea behind products and teams. There is a vehicle maker named after the animal. There is also a professional football team named the jaguars, as well as many other smaller teams that adopt that name.
♦ The jaguar is the only large cat that does not roar.
♦ Amazonian Indians tell of jaguars coming out of the forests to play with village children.
♦ Jaguars have no predators other than man. They are at the top of the wild food chain.
♦ The jaguar is perfectly adapted to climb, swim and crawl to capture prey. They have short muscular limbs that are ideal for all these activities.

Why yes it is. This is a massive common misconception with Jaguars. Many people think that there is actually a species of panther, called the black panther. Did you know that there is no such thing as a black panther? A black panther is either a black jaguar or leopard. This is why I wanted to talk a little bit about them. I wanted to make sure that when people refer to black panther, they know that they are looking at either a leopard or jaguar that has black fur. Feel a little fooled? It’s okay, I don’t think that many people know this interesting and fun fact about the jaguar.
I wanted to include the photo below of a almost black jaguar. So you can see that there are some that are not completely black, but right in the middle.

They are making great efforts to expand them into the southern U.S. There are not a lot of these animals left, it’s so sad that they are killed for their fur.
