These little creatures received their names from their odd foraging habits. They roam through hedges and shrubs in search of all their favorite food (insects, worms, snails, mice, frogs, and even snakes!) These spines have a smooth ball and the base that helps them bend on impact.
While hunting for food, these little creatures have to rely upon their hearing and smell, due to their weak eye-site (which has adapted for night vision.) These little guys have a extending long snout past their mouth which they use to help them locate and forage for food. The diet choices of a hedgehog has given them the reputation as the gardeners best friend! Eating all the pesky bugs, although they also tend to find table scraps left out for dogs and cats as well!
Hedgehogs are known to be solitary creatures, usually only pairing up during mating time. During that time they will make very loud snuffing noises. The male hedgehog tends to circle the female sometimes for hours, to try and get her to mate! Soon as they have finished the separate, and the male will take no part in baby hedgehogs family.
Baby hedgehogs are born in litters ranging from one all the way up to eleven! These baby hedgehogs will continue to stay with their mother anywhere from only four to seven weeks before heading out to face the world on their own. The Mother hedgehog must defend and guard her babies against predators even other male hedgehogs are considered a threat and dangerous. If the nest is disturbed it isn’t uncommon for the mother Hedgehog to eat her babies, in most cases he will simply move them to a brand new un -disturbed nest!
Baby hedgehogs are born blind after 32 days and have soft spines. If they are born anytime in September, they will often not survive their first winter. They babies are suckled to their mom until they are able to feed and hunt for themselves, which takes place around 4 weeks.
